Smallest Coolest Kitchen 2007 Entry #11: Morgan's Natural Patterns

Name: Morgan
Location: Clinton Hill, Brooklyn
Size & Type: 64 square feet in a 1.5 bedroom coop

Favorite resource: I found my paint color (Janovic's Siberian Snowflake) and my faucet (Hansgrohe's Interaktiv S) through AT links.I did all of my research and most of my purchasing online.

Inspiration: I looked to my favorite movie, "Down With Love," for style inspiration. From there I concentrated on materials with subtle, natural patterns...

Inspiration, continued: ... (granite countertop, cherry cabinets, cork floor) and chose hard, clean lines for the backsplash and knobs to contrast. I also made sure to use light lights, dark darks, and some mid-tones. I had my contractor fabricate little cubbies between the window and the stove. The space was too small for a cabinet, but I couldn't lose the space. The tall pantry by the entrance was also a great way to add storage.

Tip: Triple check everything to avoid unbearable delays. Living with construction is the worst.

Wow! It's amazing and looks as if every square inch was used wisely. Those corner cabinets--great choice. Amazing materials. I could see spending lots of time here.

Love the blue tiles. Everything's very well-chosen, down to the old-school electric kettle!

Oh, and don't underestimate the importance of having accessible counterspace next to the stove...

I like everything except the cork floor. I just don't like the way it looks with the wood.

I like the individual aspects but for some reason this for me is a little boring. It's hard to know how to judge these spaces, so I have been judging them purely on personal taste. In that sense, this just doesn't do it for me.

It's nice, but I don't see how it was inspired by "Down With Love".

I wish I could see a wider shot of this. I don't really get how this kitchen fits together. Love the cabinets though.

That looks like a lot of great storage for a space it's size. All of the details look well thought out, and I think the cork floor looks great with the cabinets. Great job!

Barbara Novak: [looking through a telescope] I've never seen anything so beautiful.
Catcher Block: [looking at Morgan's kitchen] Neither have I.

Love the black appliances. I'm tired of the stainless steel. The details are beautiful. Those drawers are a great addition.

Naked Girl: Ask me why I mourn.
Catcher Block: Why do you mourn baby?
Naked Girl: Cause Morgan's kitchen is so much cooler than mine

I like the whole thing. What's not to like? It's very pleasant and interesting. Love the floor. I love cherry and black anyway, so glad people don't automatically go to stainless. Looks great.

Very classy! From the ceiling light to the floor. Really like the tile backsplash. The cupboards are warm and very handsome. All in all a really first-class kitchen.

This is one of the most refined, elegant, and well thought out kitchens I've ever seen, and by far the best one in this contest. The cabinet layout allows a tremendous amount of storage, ample work surface, and great lighting, all within a subtle yet powerful aesthetic. The deep thought that you invested into this kitchen has clearly paid off. Oh, and as a devotee of cork floors, I think you have not only accented the cherry cabinets perfectly, but you've done so with a comfortable and long lasting material.

As Barbara Novak would say, "Vicky, it's adorable." And to follow up with a quote from Catcher Block, "It doesn't take a Nazi rocket scientist to figure that one out." Indeed Catcher. Indeed.

I like its simplicity and dearth of pretention. But the color palette is perhaps too minimalist; the warm cherry tone of the wood desires more vibrant companions than black, charcoal, and white. I'll give you the same advice my Hungarian thesis advisor gave me: "More reds."

Thanks for all the nice words. The space is shaped like an L and I just couldn't get a wider shot. The light fixture is actually just off the shelf at Home Depot.

My Down With Love Inspiration started with Peter McManus's kitchen. Take a look; it's different, but I think it's pretty related. I'm thrilled to see I'm not the only one who has memorized every line from the greatest movie ever.

"Ten minutes in my kitchen, and you'll both forget all about dinner."
