The plate rack is mounted over the sink, directly in front of the window, so it doesn't require a big stretch of wall but also doesn't block light from coming in.
If this look is too country for you, there are definitely more modern plate racks (simple, unfinished wood or stainless stell) out there that would serve the same purpose. We think it's a pretty interesting use of available space.

This is a great idea -- especially for those of us who have lovely views of air shafts. I wish I had seen it before I installed a rod in our kitchen window to serve as a pot rack. This would probably be prettier. Oh well.

My last apartment had access to the fire escape in the hall but had it going past the kitchen window that didn't lock shut. With the neighborhood in transition I wanted the window to be secure, so I placed a chrome baker's rack in front of the window and used the frosted glass window cling on the bottom portion of the window. Blocked the unsitely fire escape, secured access from the window, and provided a top shelf for indoor herbs, as well as spaces for coffee maker, pots and pans, and cold storage fruits & vegetables.
