Functional Design: Where Do You Hang the Kitchen Towel?

2009_03_19-HangTowels.jpgPerhaps the most important non-cooking tool in the kitchen is the kitchen towel. Our kitchen towels see hard use: we lift hot pans with them, wipe up spills, wipe our hands, dust the table, and more. They're always in use. We keep ours tucked into the refrigerator door handle - not, perhaps, the best place for them, but convenient. Where do you hang your kitchen towels? Do you tuck one in the waistband of your apron as you cook?

Do you have any good tips or products for keeping a kitchen towel handy? Also, what do you use your kitchen towels for? Do you keep separate towels for hands and dishes, or do you just have a big rotating set of all-purpose towels?

The image above, by the way, is from a lovely kitchen in The Netherlands:

I hang mine right next to my sink, which is right next to my stove on the world's cutest spoon shaped coat hooks. Of course I always end up flinging them onto the kitchen table so I need 4 or 5 in rotation at once since I'm always forgetting where I threw it.

I keep one on the stove bar/handle - this is my clean one that i use to dry clean hands, dry clean dishes, dry off freshly cleaned counter tops etc.

I never use a dish towel for grabbing hot things as they have a tendency to dangle, drag and sway around. I'm always afraid ill end up with a handful of flaming cloth. I do have 3 hooks with oven mitts and hot pads right next to the stove for that.

Usually after a few days the clean one naturally manages to get dirty/unfresh and is replaced with a new one and used for cleaning up spills, dusting crumbs etc... then ends up in the wash pretty soon after that. I wish I had a genius good spot for this one but the truth is it usually ends up sitting on this few inch wide ledge of the counter just between the sink in the wall.

I toss mine over the edge of the sink which always ends up getting it wet! My husband throws his over his shoulder.

I hang mine on the handle to the oven and use it as an oven mitt when I need to take something hot out of the oven.

The kitchen towel has become a bit of a problem. We used to hand it from the oven door bar. Then our cat started taking it all the time. Now it just ends up folded on the counter where he's less interested in it. Maybe I'll find a more proper place for it soon!

Mine is on the fridge door handle because it is closest to the sink---my apartment sort of cheaped out on knobs and drawer pulls so the only other option is the oven door and it is farther to walk.

My towels are also on the oven handle with a ceramic dish on the counter next to the stove with my potholders in it.

I am nomad, and have lived in rentals for the past ten years (2 apts and 6 houses in 10 years). If I have cabinets that extend out on either side of the sink, I will use a spring-tensioned curtain rod, or even a spring tensioned shower-curtain rod to fit in-between the sides of the two cabinets as a long towel bar. Chic it is not, but very handy. Dish towel(s) hang on one end, and my dish rag and dish gloves go on the other end.

On the fridge with one of those magnetic clips. Neither the fridge handle nor the oven handle offer a spot and the fridge is right next to the prep area and not far from the sink.

I have a dog who likes to steal and chew on towels, so I have a towel holder similar to this: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=14789626 that is on a high cabinet door. Living with counter-surfing dogs makes you get creative.

Mine are always draped over the back of a kitchen chair to 'dry'. Always. My kitchen is classy like that.

We keep ours on the oven bar. But when I'm working I usually have two or three out (one in my waistband as an apron, one over my shoulder, and one sitting on the counter) I'm not sure exactly how this happens but it always seems to. Needless to say, we have a large rotating supply of basic white dishcloths that constantly require washing.

wow, i'm feeling like a real towel w*0re. i have a very small kitchen but i always have one towel on the oven door and another on the fridge handle. i could stand in the center of my kitchen a reach both with a little stretch.

if i'm cooking anything other than a simple snack or quick dinner, i've got an apron on and at least two more towels out - one for wiping up cutting boards and counters and one attached to me for quick hand drying, etc. i'm always washing (or at least rinsing) my hands white cooking.

I have a magnet with two hooks on the fridge so that they are easy to dry my hands on, wipe a pot down, and dry all the way (instead of being folded over something and having damp spots). At first I hated the idea of having objects on the fridge, but it works and it feels nice and sanitary.

There are have always been doors for the under-sink cabinets and I just drape it over that. Half in, half out - but it stays dry is always handy once I've gotten my hands wet at the sink.

Where don't I keep a kitchen towel? :) I've got one hanging on the refrigerator door handle, one hanging on the oven bar, two bar towels folded on the cart by the oven to be used as mitts, extras in a basket on the stainless steel shelving unit, and a couple of bread towels on the counter for baking and storing my sourdough bread. Oh, and one slung over my left shoulder.

I would love to have a few decorative, non-workhorse kitchen towels to display somewhere, but I'm afraid I would just start abusing them like the others.

I have one of these and I love it. Now, if only I could get the boyfriend to use it....

It comes off easy too, for you renters. :)

Fridge handle, and a backup on the towel bar on our microwave trolley thing. My mom always kept towels on the fridge handle, and I never noticed that other people don't until adulthood.

i keep a clean one (or two) over the oven handle for drying hands & dishes (they usually air dry in the sink, but those little pools of water on the bottom of cups drive me nuts).

i keep the not "fresh" but not quite "dirty" dishtowels in a little plastic basket under the sink and use those to wipe up spills or spot clean the floor. they go straight to the laundry after that.

Have hand towel and dishes towel. Plus kitchen wipe for spills. Kitchen towel is currently draped over the blender as its out of the dogs reach. He has a fascination with them and if can reach it he will get it and chew it to shreds.

half stuck in a drawer. draped over air drying dishes. folded at lip of the sink. on my shoulder. on the counter.

Great post! I'm going to get some over cabinet door towel bars now. Don't know why I didn't think to before!

I hang one on the stove handle. I use that one only when I'm done with everything in the kitchen and have just washed my hands.

Then I keep another one on a command-strip hook (yeah, utilitarian) stuck onto the side of one of my cabinets near the sink. I use that one if I just need to quickly wash my hands in between kitchen tasks, etc. I change that one out much more often than the stove one.

Sometimes I have an old rag around if I am being particularly messy.

my drawer pulls are long and skinny and allow me to put my nice kitchen towels through them...i also have a stack of not-so-nice kitchen towels stored on top of the fridge for when i do dishes or make a big mess.

This is a huge issue for me because my dog likes to jump at the towels if they're hanging anywhere within reach - or even just sitting too close to the edge of the counter! If I could, I would leave it on the oven bar, but I have a little rack that hooks on to the inside of cupboard door under the sink that I use, though half the time it's sitting on the counter (pushed away from the edge!) somewhere.

Ours is hung on the only drawer in the kitchen. It's a general purpose towel, but I do have separate sponges for the dishes and countertop so really the towel only sees service as a hand-drier. If I use it for spills or something really messy it goes right into the laundry. Potholders are around the corner on a rack in a short hallway. Not exactly convenient, but really the only place for them.

I have a couple high cupboards over the sink, so I currently have them S-Hooked to the handles, but soon, I'll have an over-the-cabinet towel bar to hang them on!

Mine go over the handle of the stove. We keep 2 out at all times - a thicker one meant for wiping hands, wiping counters, etc. and a thin cheesecloth type exclusively for drying dishes.

Stove handle is where I keep my dirtiest one usually. There are one or two on hooks under the sink. One that is usually for drying clean stuff (and rotates to become the one used to wipe up stuff/use as oven mitt on the over door) and large clean one I use for covering my sourdough.
I also have bamboo washcloths which are antibacterial so hardly ever get washed unless they actually look dirty.

I use them most often to take hot things out of the oven or hold my cast iron pan. I also brush crumbs off the counter, hit my boyfriend's butt while he's cooking, clean mirrors, and dry dishes with them. Sometimes I just drop them onto the floor and foot-mop if I spill tea ;)

Stove bar in my tiny kitchen, too. Usually two there - a semi-clean one to use in cooking, and a clean one for dishes, and I rotate them. I prefer over mits/pads for taking things out of the oven, but there are NO hooks in my kitchen, so I rarely have one conveniently to hand.

If I'm in the zone cooking, though, I don't feel comfortable without a tea towel draped over my shoulder. I don't usually wear an apron, so I use that to pick up hot stuff (if you double or triple it it doesn't dangle, and it's more padded and protective) and to wipe my hands on, mop things up, etc. Then it usually goes straight into the laundry sink once I'm done!

On a hook above the sink.. on the fridge handle.. and then my very favorite... Cat Butt Towel Holder. This was a gift from a friend @ our wedding last year. It is brilliant! Ours is anchored in the middle of our fridge door.

One of my biggest complaints about my apartment's kitchen is that there's no convenient place to hang a towel; if I put it through the fridge handle, it interferes with the oven door. The cupboard handles are knobs, so they're no good for towels. A past tenant hung plastic hooks in the cupboards, but then you have to open the cupboards to get to them.

If I'm spending a lot of time in the kitchen and need to wipe my hands a lot, I'll usually just throw a towel over my shoulder like my mom does. I've only just recently realized how handy wearing an apron would be!
