What's the Deal With: Baby Kiwi

2007_10_09-BabyKiwi.jpg

Baby kiwi apparently have not had time to grow their brown fuzzy jackets; they're naked and green under a thin skin. Turns out, though, that baby kiwi are in fact only a relative of their more grownup namesake.

We found them at Trader Joe's and had to try them. They don't need to be peeled; they can be popped whole, like a berry. They have a sweet, rounded taste without the acidity of a kiwifruit, and a slightly bitter aftertaste from the skin.

Baby kiwi are fairly delicate and should be eaten soon after you buy them. They will last for a couple days in the fridge, but we found that refrigeration did not do any favors for their taste.

At room temperature, fully ripe, these are luscious little berries and we recommend you try them if you can find them!

What a fun little berry...I wonder if there are any recipes involving it out there?

I saw these at TJ's the other night and they piqued my interest. I might have to try them.

We had these in addition to golden kiwi while we were honeymooning in New Zealand. We thought they were quite tasty. :)

They have these at Harrod's food section in London last year. So good! As I recall they were pricey, but everything in London is pricey, so I didn't really mind. They were delicious! My mom and I talk about them to this day! I'll have to let her know they carry them at TJ's.

These were available at our TJ's but were a bit smaller (about the size of a grape) and were called "Kiwiberries".

And, they're really good. :)
